Day 1 – Travel and Joppa

Our group arrived safely in Israel from several different US states from the west coast, the east coast, and several states in between! We enjoyed our trip to the Sea of Galilee, where we are staying in the city of Tiberias. On the way, we visited the ancient city of Joppa. This was the gateway port to ancient Israel and was the third largest port in the world in Bible times. Joppa is considered to be the oldest port in the world.

Jonah boarded the boat here to go to Tarshish, in the opposite direction from Nineveh, a city in the desert which is in present-day Iraq. In Acts 9, Peter raised Tabitha to life here, and in Acts 10 he saw a vision of unclean animals while he was on the rooftop of Simon the Tanner here. The result of this vision was that he would go to Caesarea and preach to the household of Cornelius. This story opened the door for the gospel to go from Jerusalem to the Gentiles.

We are looking forward to visiting Caesarea, the Valley of Megiddo and Nazareth tomorrow. Thank you for following our trip online. Check back tomorrow for more pictures and videos!
